Called the P400e, the new plug-in hybrid Defender lifts its electrified powertrain from the Range Rover Sport PHEV, combining a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. Together, the P400e is not left wanting for performance with the plug-in hybrid engine producing 300kW and 650Nm. The deliveries of the Land Rover Defender plug-in hybrid are expected to commence in India from the first quarter of the Financial Year 2021-22. In the new Land Rover Defender P400e, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine joins forces with a 105kW electric motor, producing a combined power of 404PS and 640Nm of cumulative torque.

The claimed fuel consumption figures for the Land Rover Defender PHEV: 2.8 L/100 km (based on the WLTP cycle) and 3.3 L/100 km (based on the NEDC standard) also seemed rather ambitious, but after driving the P400e for a considerable amount of time (which included the performance testing), we saw indicated figures in the low 7L/100 km range.
