The vehicle in question was a 3.8 E-type straight 6 cylinder that I have to say was a stunning example of this model and privilege to work with. Our customers concern was unstable idle speed, reluctance to rev, and horrendous backfiring with hesitation at wide open throttle (WOT [the default position for E-type drivers]).
CAR SPECIFICATIONS - JAGUAR 3.8 E-TYPE. Stamped on the right-hand frame/cross member above hydraulic damper mounting. Stamped on right-hand side of cylinder block above the pressure oil filter. Also on front end of cylinder head casting. Stamped on a shoulder at the left-hand rear corner of the gearbox casing and on the top cover.
By 1963, more than a third of E-type production went to the United States. In 1964, engine displacement increased to 4.2 liters for more torque.
Jaguar E-type S1, S1.5 & S2 specifications. Sold/number built 1961-’71/57,253. Construction steel monocoque with tubular front structure Engine iron-block, alloy-head, dohc 3781/4235cc ‘six’, with triple SU or twin Stromberg carbs. Max power 246bhp @ 5500rpm (US SII) to 265bhp @ 5400rpm.
