The 18-55mm VR feels perfectly matched to the weightless D40, D40x, D60 or D80. It doesn't feel bad on my D3, either. It's light but solid. The zoom ring is damped perfectly. This 18-55mm VR is the same as the ridiculously good 18-55mm II kit lens, with the addition of Vibration Reduction (VR). I'm addicted to VR, since with VR I can shoot Nikon’s technical name for this lens is the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED. It’s designed for Nikon’s cameras with the DX cropped sensor, so to convert to full-frame equivalent, you multiple by 1.5. So on a camera with a cropped DX sensor it comes to around 26 to 83mm. At its widest end, it’s not notably wide. Just like the 55-200mm VR, it is designed to be used with the Nikon 18-55mm DX VR kit lens to provide expanded focal range for telephoto shots. Nikon 55-300mm is currently the cheapest way to get to true 300mm focal length in Nikon’s current line of lenses, with a little more shorter range to work with than the Nikon 70-300mm VR lens.
